Engaging Ethnoculturally Diverse Youth in VolunteerismMay 07, 2009
Communities need to share experiences, learn from each other
and build bridges between mainstream organizations and
culture-specific community groups and associations. CCBR is
collaborating in the development of a new model to engage
newcomer youth in volunteering. Year one focus groups (2008)
produced the report entitled "Engaging Youth from Diverse
Ethnocultural Communities- Practices, Perceptions and
Strategies". The MT Space is developing a theatrical
presentation based on newcomer youth experiences in volunteering.
It will be presented to students at St. Mary's and Forest Heights
High Schools at the end of May 2009. CCBR will be
facilitating small focus group after the
presentation, and all students and teachers will have an
opportunity to discuss the implications of the presentation as
well. The MT Space is hoping to be able to recruit more students
to participate in their Volunteering... Eh! Engaging
Culturally Diverse Youth in Volunteerism Event which is
hosted by The KW Multicultural Centre in October.
This is part of a larger youth engagement project, funded by the Government of Ontario. |
