New Pilot Programs addressing Homelessness in Waterloo Region

May 07, 2009

The Centre for Community Based Research is heading up the evaluation of 6 projects for the Region of Waterloo's Persistent Homelessness Project.

These include:

The Street Outreach, Streets to Stable Housing, Shelters to Housing Stability and Whatever it Takes. Two new pilot programs have been launched and are: The Hospitality House Pilot Program and At-Home Outreach Pilot Program.

Hospitality House Pilot Program: The Working Centre has officially opened the doors to it Hospitality House, located in downtown Kitchener. Once the house is occupied and the Program is operating at full-capacity, it will offer a five-bed non-medical housing with support model that encourages medical and life stabilization for people who are prematurely aged and are currently, formerly or at-risk or experiencing homelessness.

The At-Home Outreach Pilot Program offered through the Working Centre is a specialized preventative outreach model that assists people who are prematurely aged and currently housed, but at-risk of experiencing persistent homelessness to receive support from Community Care Access Centre (CCAC). The At-Home Outreach worker acts in the role of mediator to make CCAC available in a participant's home who may not otherwise have access to this type of care by providing accompaniment and support for as long as needed. It is the intention that this program will reduce persistent homelessness by enabling participants to maintain their housing over the long term.
